American entertainer Phineas Taylor Barnum will be forever remembered for his ability to make the real and the imaginary seem possible. He was orphaned and penniless. The son of a tailor opens a wax museum. However, his focus shifts quickly to the unusual and peculiar and he introduces extraordinary and never-before-seen live acts to the circus stage. Some people consider Barnum's vast collection of strangeities a freak show. But Phineas is obsessed with cheers and respectability and will risk everything to win Jenny Lind as an opera singer to make it appealing to high-brow audiences.
