The film is about Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, two detectives in homicide who are on a desperate search for a serial killer. He justifies their crimes to absolve the rest of the world from the Seven Deadly Sins. As the psychotic "John Doe," (Kevin Spacey), preaches to Detectives Somerset & Mills, the movie shows us the torturous remains of each victim. Gluttony is the first sin and the killer's horrific capacity to murder are clearly displayed in dark, subdued tones typical of noir film. Somerset, a seasoned but educated man with a jaded mind, studies the Seven Deadly Sins to discover the killer's method of operation. Meanwhile Pitt (the bright and energetic Detective Mills) laughs at Somerset's efforts to gain insight into the thoughts and actions of the killer.
