The 1909 expedition led by Captain Ejnar Mikelsen from Denmark was trying to prove the United States claim to North Eastern Greenland. This claim was founded on the notion that Greenland could be broken into different parts. Mikkelsen, along with Iver Iversen, sled across the ice, leaving behind his crew. Although they find the evidence that Greenland has one island, it takes them longer to return to their ship. They battle extreme hunger and fatigue, and are finally able to return home to their ship, which is now buried in ice, and find the camp deserted.
